Amazon Listing Optimization

Selling on Amazon doesn’t end at listing your product on the marketplace. To get it sold, you will need to optimize your listing and generate sales. Amazon has millions of listed products, and making your product stand out can be tough, especially if you don’t properly optimize your listings. Searching for a specific product name or relevant keywords is the primary method customers use to find products. Basically, building a solid listing can result in favorable sales.

Ways to Boost Your Amazon Listings

  1. Create an informative and effective product title – In Amazon, you can’t just lure customers with catchy and promising product titles, like using “premium,” “sale,” “best seller,” or any other marketing slogans, primarily because that’s against their Product Title Guidelines.

So how do you write an effective product title? You simply have to abide by Amazon’s guidelines because that is all you need for a product title. Informative, yet simple and concise. Typically, an effective product title must consist of the following:

  • Brand: If your product is under private label, include the brand name; otherwise it should not be included.
  • Product Line: Tell shoppers exactly what your product is, for example “Yoga Pants,” “Casual Dress,” or “Men’s Pullover.”
  • Key Feature: Only put honest key features, for example “battery operated,” “rechargeable,” “hypoallergenic,” “soft,” “stretchable,” and whatnot, but make sure not to over-do this. Don’t include more than 3 key features; leave the rest for the description part.
  • Size: Spell out measurements ( 6 inches not 6″ )
  • Color: If the product comes in only 1 color, include the color, otherwise it should not be included.

Effective Amazon Product Title Samples

Disclaimer: These titles are actual product titles I’ve collected from Amazon’s Best Seller list under the Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry Category.

  • “High Waist Out Pocket Yoga Pants Tummy Control Workout Running 4 Way Stretch Yoga Leggings”
  • “Women’s Long Sleeve Pocket Casual Loose T-Shirt Dress”
  • “RockDove Two-Tone Memory Foam Warm House Slippers for Men w/Indoor Outdoor Sole”
  • “Trendy Warm Chunky Soft Stretch Cable Knit Beanie Skully”

Notice how the title was constructed. The best tip is to write your product the same way you search for a specific product: descriptive, exact and straight to the point.

2. Detailed description – Not all shoppers have the time to read a product description, so it’s better to summarize your description and write it in bullet points that emphasize key points and features. There’s a greater chance a customer will read bullet points than a paragraph of text.

3. Get the product professionally photographed – How your products are displayed has a big impact on your sales. Personally, the product image is the very first thing I check before anything else – and I am certain almost of us are the same.

What do you need to know about product photos on Amazon? Basically, you only need to follow Amazon’s image guidelines:

  • The image must be the cover art or a professional photograph of the product being sold. Drawings or illustrations of the product are not allowed.
  • The image must not contain gratuitous or confusing additional objects.
  • The image must be in focus, professionally lit and photographed or scanned, with realistic color, and smooth edges.
  • Books, Music, and Video/DVD images should be the front cover art, and fill 100% of the image frame. Jewel cases, promotional stickers, and cellophane are not allowed.
  • All other products should fill 85% or more of the image frame.
  • The full product must be in frame.
  • Backgrounds must be pure white (RGB 255,255,255).
  • The image must not contain additional text, graphics, or inset images.

4. Use relevant terms and keywords – Choosing the best keywords to describe your product is vital to get customers to locate your product. The golden rule is to use only the most relevant keywords. Providing inaccurate, misleading and irrelevant keywords just to get your product in the search results can get your account suspended. These keywords will be your key to increase your products’ exposure and sales.

5. Highlight product features and benefits – Know your product well and list its main features and benefits. Only put honest key features and never put false claims to avoid customer complaints and negative reviews.

6. Encourage customer reviews – Product reviews have a huge impact on consumers’ purchasing decisions. It has become a standard basis to obtain the information they need to make confident purchasing decisions. So, to make use of this Amazon feature, you must encourage your customers to leave reviews even by emailing them.

7. E-commerce pricing strategy – More often than not, putting your product on sale creates a sense of urgency for customers to buy your products now. In Seller Central, you can put your product on sale for a specific time period by putting the real price on “Your Price” and the discounted price on the “Sale price.” But don’t take too much advantage of it; always make the price look believable. $100 down to $10? Hmm, that could really be cheap for a reason. $100 down to $70? Sounds like a very good deal.

8. Use Amazon Super URL

What is Amazon Super URL?

Amazon uses various algorithms to identify which product is most attractive to customers. One way is through identifying which is the most-searched-for keyword. When a customer searches for a certain product on Amazon using a keyword, finds your product in the search results and purchases it, Amazon pushes your product rank up. More sales from the search query mean a higher rank. That’s basically what Amazon Super URL aims to do.

To illustrate what Super URL is, check the links below:

Super URL:

Regular URL:

Clicking both links will lead you to the same product, but a Super URL makes it appear that you ended up on that product because you specifically searched for it using the keyword “yoga pants.” More clicks and successful purchases using the Super URL improve your rank.

How can you make use of Amazon Super URL?

You can place it on external sources like social media, blogs, forums, and newsletters.

Is using Super URL allowed by Amazon?

Technically. There are no specific Amazon guidelines that prohibit you from using a Super URL, however, it’s apparently a manipulation of their algorithm; therefore, it can put your account at risk.

Basically, there are many ways to optimize your Amazon listings, and if you just put them all to use, you will notice how your leads can turn into sales. Remember that a great listing comes with high-rating, positive customer reviews, enticing product features and professionally photographed pictures — herein lies your success.
